I thought pounds sterling was for currency as well as jewelery measured in troy pounds and ounce.
A penny coin was literally, as well as monetarily, 1/240th of a troy pound of sterling silver and used as a measure of weight.
Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. The minimum millesimal fineness is 925.
Fine silver (99.9% pure) is generally too soft for producing large functional objects.Last edited by Damon; 11-03-2006 at 02:09 AM.

Now leaving aside the English and our language, let's talk about the infallibility of the Pope for a second.
