I hung up my spurs in '02 after 20 years of fast trucks and 10 years of super heavy haul big iron. Got pretty much nothing to show for my 3 million plus miles except memories. You're right about there's always somebody out there a little bigger and little badder. Those old K modle Cummins could make some HP and torque if they were set right. I tangled with one going up Needles hill one afternoon. HE decided he wanted the front door and I told him to come get it. He did, but just barely. We were both charging up that hill in our supersonic cow wagons at around 90 and freight haulers were hitting the shoulder to let us by and watch the race.
Every now and then I see a really nicely decked out heavy haul rig and I think maybe I'd like to do that again. That thought passes in about 5 seconds. I don't miss it.
If I can make it where I'm at for another five years without pulling somebody's lips over their heads, I'll have a real retirement.
Should have thought about that 40 years ago, but I was too busy going fast.
