Flying W is a historic running cattle ranch that has been around since the 50's. It is a huge tourist attraction that also offers western style food and entertainment. They do weddings, reunions and parties there also. It was just a great attraction for the Colorado Springs area. Just a shame...

That is horrible. Thank God for human kindness! Lets hope the C-130's are fast and accurate on their drops and all the firemen stay safe fighting it.

Being in the communication and television business I can tell you that watching TV only gets you part of it. Try watching some of the internet feeds. Last night 9news failed to kill any of the feeds on Livestream. You could see and hear all activity going on and even the standby's before a live report. It's kind of cool because you can see the reporters warming up people for the questions so they answer fast and accurately when they go live.

The C-130's were grounded last night due to strong down force winds in the canyon and the dip zone was too small for such a large plane. If one of those goes down you would have a real mess. I picked that one up from the background chatter before the fire Chief and Gov spoke. As for the National Guard, the Gov said it best when he said there is not much they can do other than help create fire lines as the whole fire really cannot be put out. Colorado is already chewing up half of the nations fire fighting resources. Also, if you stop to think about it the military has already been deployed to some extent with the C-130's.

This fire is really sad. It has nearly moved into the city. The AF Academy has nearly evac'd and at one point I-25 going into the Springs was shutdown.

It is almost impossible to fight a fire like that one: 10 years of drought, a high temperature spike,
strong and erratic winds, heavy fuel load, steep terrain, and a fully established burn with tremendous momentum.

Firefighters might be able to make a stand at certain points on the fire front, but only if they
have enough resources and at least 2 reliable escape routes, in case it gets away from them.

Flying tanker aircraft in those conditions is extremely dangerous: heavy loads,
turbulance, poor visibility, "low and slow". Those pilots have a lot of skill and guts.

That fire will continue to expand until the weather changes or it runs out of fuel. In the
meantime, they can only attack the fire from the rear (upwind, downslope) by gradually
building a line around it, and cutting it off in a "pincer" movement. Until then, it's
"protect the exposures" as much as possible, and pray for rain.

Good luck to you all in C-Springs.

    Paul

Mountain Shadows I guess is now burning,,,

We are hearing that there were several inaccurate reports about how this started

Changing my Avatar until the Waldo Canyon Fire is controlled and our Families and Friends are safe again.

Although I might not be living in Colorado now, Colorado will always live in my heart..

Fire is now 25% contained, so it is progress!
