It's an easy way to reach a broad audience. Yes, if you focus on all the superficial stuff it does sound worthless, but now you can get news and events faster from people who are there. All those revolutionary protests in the Middle East were helped by Twitter. In the middle of a natural disaster text messaging is much more reliable than cell calls.

Bingo, yea that is certainly true but why do people insist on posting garbage in the first place.

For some reason, a lot of self important people think everyone wants to know every piece of mind numbing minutia of their day. Facebook was bad enough, ex. "I just had a burrito at Chipotle." has been replaced with a Tweet. "Some j-hole in a red camaro just cut me off" I just don't get it either, most of the younger people I work with are on Twitter. I guess some people have nothing better to do with their time. Read a book.

As to Jimmy's example, I think it's a shame that we applaud someone for failing, we mustn't hurt anyone's feelings apparantly. Growing up, like most of you guys, I remember being on a winning team and a losing team, not everyone got a trophy, and sometimes you don't get picked for a team. For example, a buddy of mine said his son is on a little league team, so I asked what position did he try out for? His reply was his son did not have to try-out, he just signed him up and he gets to play. I guess times change, when I played summer little league, all the boys came down to the field and participated in numerous drills. A few days later, a roster was posted letting you know which team you were on. And when it came time to bat, you got a maximun of six pitches, assuming you had a full count and didn't foul tip the ball. Oh yah, I almost forgot, we kept score!

Twitter has its place. For example China did a very good job of stopping things from going into the country, but it blew it when if forgot to put up a wall going out - hence we actually know what happened when that nation had it's earthquakes... Just like we know how slow the response to hurricane Katrina was! Heck it was a twitter account that recited the play by play when Bin Laden was taken out.

That's all to say that Twitter gives the world a bit of transparency. Moreover - the public now becomes the source of the news! That's a huge concept!

But it's like anything else! 99% of it is noise. Kind of like going to a family reunion lol. You got to listen to Uncle Bob ramble off for ever and a day about nothing!

I actually like Twitter a lot.
No, not what celebrities has to share on it
It is, however, a super fast way to get the latest news on curent affairs and sports results without all the surrounding noice on telly and the web.
The bombing in Oslo was a great example.
Lots of people tweeted immediately after and the info given proved better than initial news-broadcasts.
There are lots of other stuff that makes it great too, like getting the take on how Leeds United are playing while the match is still on, how Petter Northug looks out in the tracks before he reaches the checkpoint. And tons of other tidbits not as easily found elsewhere

LUFC! I like them on account of a friend; we don't get any coverage of The Championship league here in the States so it's hard to consider myself a fan until they make it back to the EPL.
