there's no art left in art either.
Last week my wife and I visited Ghent, which is a Belgian city dating back to before the dark ages.
We visited buildings that have been in continuous use since 13xx. Anyway, those places typically have lots of art as well, like the St. Baafs Cathedral which houses a vast amount of paintings and statues.
The highlight was the original 'Mystic Lamb'. When I saw that, I just went silent. That painting is so incredibly lifelike and inspiring I cannot put it to words. It looks more real and anatomically correct than a photographic picture. The amount of skill that went into that piece is just off the charts. Those were the days when an artist possessed skills that set them apart from mere mortals.
Not 50 meters away from that masterpiece (in a different area) was an artpiece (and I use the term generously) titled 'monster'. Supposedly it had some meaning about evil. It looked just like a 500 pound bronze dog turd. No doubt it has special meaning. Because modern art has to have explicit meaning. Because the artist doesn't have actual skill anymore, art has become about meaning, rather than skill.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.
