Astronaut Neil Armstrong dies at 82
Astronaut Neil Armstrong dies at 82 | Fox News
Another good man Leaves us;
High Flight
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

I grew up with Neil Armstrong being a national hero. In Houston, the space program and astronauts were a particular source of local pride.
He was one of those great ones. "One small step for Man, One giant leap for mankind". I feel a little bit older with his passing.
Thank you, Hirlau, for the amazingly appropriate words. You have a gift for that.

RIP Neil Armstrong.
A true American Hero.
He didn't use his fame for personal gain or to push his political views.
To the people that think he didn't land on the moon, SIT ON IT!

I've heard that poem so MANY times. When I was a kid and the TV station went off the air at midnight, they always closed with this poem and shots of a T38 splitting the heavens.
I always loved it.

If you love the poem, then you should read the story of the young man who wrote it.

He was a true hero! I put him right up there with Yuri Gagarin. I'm hoping we put more effort into building on their legacy.

Thanked: 3223Sad news indeed. He was an inspirational figure to a 16 year old ,that I know, who watched that moon landing. High Flight, written by the author while serving with 412 Squadron RCAF in WWII, is one of the most touching poems that I have had the pleasure to read. So appropriate on this sad occasion. RIP Neil Armstrong.

Thanked: 369I remember vividly watching Armstrong jump off the Lunar Lander onto the surface of the moon on our black and white television. A true American Hero.

R.I.P. Neil Armstrong. Mankind has lost a great man. I believe he is a hero to all humanity, not just the American people.
