Good question...
Only speculation so far and by the time it
is known for sure I doubt the news will follow up.
One speculation was that it was an allergic reaction.
The bugs are full of foul stuff that in large amounts
could trigger a reaction not too different than
peanut allergy or a bee sting.
So perhaps he got a big bag of bad ones
not just one.
Eating bugs is common, but roaches not so much
because they build up toxic crud. Eating them in a
contest could be nasty....

That is the most grotesque thing I've read about in a long time. I can only conclude that the winner of that contest got what he wanted from it.

Florida also has this guy;
Tim Dorsey
His novels are hilarious and his Florida factoids as narrated by his main character, Serge A Storms, are fascinating.
Member Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club, participant SE Asia War Games 1972-1973. The oath I swore has no statute of limitation.

Miami Beach, the Keys, Disney World, spring break destinations (I've been to several in FL during college), gators... there's a lot to still enjoy in La Florida. When Disney starts promoting those eating insect contests -- that's when you make a run for the plains of Texas.
You can take the boy out of NY, but you can't take NY out of the boy.

Who can afford Disney these days, sad to say. Even the water parks are over priced.
Once the boy gets a job that can support a family, I'm headed to Texas; gonna take pictures on the road with Wullie.
Maybe buy one of those abandoned buildings.
