Rich, I had awful stomach problems when I was younger, things that kept me out of school and home a lot. I have also had a hiatial (sp) hernia, and an esophigal ulcer. I was in so much pain at times with stomach problems that the only thing that would allow me to keep breathing without screaming was morphine at the hospital. The bad news was that doctors were never able to figure out what exactly was causing the pain, even though I went to the best doctors around, the good news is that at around 18 or 19 everything just seemed to settle down and stop, and I havent had problems since. Doctors say this happens for some reason after puberty or during the teenage years when somehow the body just seems to move on. I hope, that your son doesnt go through what I went through, but hopefully regardless of the problem he will grow out of it as well.

At any rate, keep us posted, I hope everything turns out ok, our thoughts are with you.

Wow that is something. Fortunately so far when I ask him on a scale of 1 to 10 how bad it hurts he has only gone up to 4 at the worst. He is just hitting puberty so this is interesting. I have not been real happy with the MD's so far. The urologist seemed more interested in seeing is abnormal kidneys than figuring out why he was in pain. Oh well we will keep searching and praying. I am hoping it just goes away like yours. But then he might want only big razors..

Rich, I have the same stomach problem as Josh, hiatus hernia, and an esophigal ulcer, plus a cascaded stomach. I once had a trip to a hospital in the middle of the night, with the pain so strong, I couldn't stay upright. The problem with the stomach pain is that it doesn't actually come from the stomach itself, but the whole back hurt, the lower abdomen, plexus regia, e.t.c. It's called reflected pain. The doctors also said it was syndrome from the fast body growth in the puberty (I'm ~6.3 now). I wish your boy a quick recovery...

p.s. Don't worry, I like smaller razors as well

I as well went through some pretty bad stomach stuff in my early teens. I remember the one week it started; worst week of my life. The only thing I can remember that hurt more than that was breaking my arm.

It was the strangest thing too, the doc couldn't figure out what it was and just prescribed me some antacids (which didn't help at all). The pain wasn't really in my stomach area either, it was mostly coming from the abdominal area. The even stranger thing is that for the week I had it, it only ever came about in the evening. I'd be fine up until 4-5pm, and then things would just take a turn for the worse. The only thing I could do was writhe around in positions that would make contortionists envious to try and alleviate the pain.

The best description I could find for it is if my stomach couldn't handle the acids and just decided to pass them to my GI tract instead :\ Every now and then I have a minor relapse, usually for no more than a day, but only once has it been anywhere near as bad. If there's one thing I could possibly link it to, it's perhaps little sleep combined with little food taken in.

I share your son's pain, sure hope he gets well, and that you figure out what it is. All the best to him and your family.

I am very sorry to hear of your son's problems.

My son is developmentally disabled and has had many medical problems during his life (he is 27 now). The important thing is to use your gut instincts as his parent when you deal with the M.Ds and if you feel he is not getting the attention he needs do not settle for what they tell you. get another opinion until you find someone who will give you the help you need. Use the internet to do research on his problems and use that info when you see the M.Ds. Sometimes its only your perseverance that will get you a solution. The most important thing is to remember the old adage about the squeaky wheel getting the grease, drive the M.Ds crazy.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for the advice my wife is a pro at driving men crazy so I will sicc her on them. Actually we have written off one MD as an idiot an are going to another this week. I have come to realize you have to be your own advocate when dealing with MD's some think they are the second coming. I find it hard to believe that they don't realize that all you need as a parent are real answers even if sometimes the answer is "I don't know"
