Thanked: 4942Alot of forums that you guys belong to already have had ads and banners or promoted their own items for sale that funded their activities. I can't believe the amount of time David and Joe spend on the site keeping it up so that we can utilize all the wonderful features. With the site supporting itself, we will be able to do much more. I really have greatly appreciated their efforts and dedication to building and maintaining this wonderful place. SRP continues to be the absolute best provider of straight razor information out there. We have always had some members who look to find fault vs. finding the positive, but the overwhelming amount of members have always appreciated, contributed to and been very complimentary of what we have here.
When I first started SRP, there was no Straight Razor Forum any where and no central source of information regarding vendors, collecting, honing, what was out there, stropping, etc. There were a few vendors that sidelined Straight Razors and Classic Shaving didn't exist. As a result of our pioneering, there are now many vendors and forums and this really gives us the opportunity to highlight those vendors that we know will provide our members with great services and supplies along with perpetuating this fine tradition.
Thanks Guys!!

So you are willing to Block ads for products we have discussed and the majority ruling is that we do not recommend that product, I think that is wonderful.
Would you be opposed to banner ads in prime locations for OUR vendors to purchase, that would get more attention that the google ads? If we must have ads, I think this is the only way to make it fair to member owned businesses.

Thanked: 328Absolutely.. If there's a bad ad, let me know which one, and why.. I'll block it..
If a member business wants to advertise, they should contact Lynn and they'll go on a list of people that want to.. Again, we're just feeling things out, and getting our feet wet.. We'll be doing more shortly.. And if someone wants to advertise, they should email Lynn..

Seems to me like the devs want to implement the ads in a very fair manner. I think they are a fine idea. While I don't like ads much, and I suspect noone does, the reality is that this site is as free as free beer gets, and you can't expect something to stay that way forever when there is a bill to pay at some point. Not only are there operating costs, but the devs spend a lot of time working on a site of this complexity, I am sure. I'm sure because I worked on several forum sites as a paid employee prior to joining the gun club, and they are very complicated animals.
That said, I am a member of ignsider, and I really like their model. You can be a free member as long as you want to be, but once you start paying, you can hide the ads. You also can only have an avatar if you're a paying member, and I don't know how well that would go down here, as everyone has one now. I was immensely surprised by that fact, and also by the fact that you can just up and create & upload to a gallery here, with quite a large amount of space allocated to each user.
SRP is a very high quality website. There are many commercial sites out there with fewer features that charge for more (IGN is a good example, their forums are really much clunkier than these). The introduction of ads or subscription fees are a natural progression in the site's life, I think. I do hope that if ads are implemented, a subscription of some type is offered to block them. I would gladly pay 25-50 dollars a year to suppress ads on forums I enjoy as much as these.

I've been coming directly to the /forums/ extension because of my 15" monitor. The home page takes too much of that little screen away. I just got a new 19" monitor and have decided to keep going to my /forums/ bookmark just to avoid the ads while I'm reading posts.

I think our own vendor ads would be great and have already e-mailed Lynn about it. I would gladly pay to put an ad here instead of the non-relevant ones and support the site.

They call that a vendor's permit?

Ditto!
Once I get my soaps running full swing and comfortable enough honing cheap razors I'd LOVE to pay for advertizing on here. I expect to be up by the end of January latest.
Also, I think a banner "space" that prevents the add from going outside the banner so that we could get ads in a fashion that doesn't block the reading is ideal. I'm not bothered by the "featured links" showing up between 2 posts. It's a minor blurb compared to how some of us babble on . .
