I have started and run several small companys over the yrs.It was mandatory to take two weeks vacation one a yr (my mandate).
You need some brain chill time away from the job to do your best.

At the place I used to work, I was able to cash out unused PTO. There were a few years that I took out over $5k in cash outs.
I imagine that with enough people earning a larger amount, those cash outs would add up.

Just reading about this makes my bullsh*t detector squawk. So, what are the "peons"
    being asked to "sacrifice"?

Thanks for the responses! I will put out my thoughts in general here.

Our CEO made 1.8 million in 2010. If he did not take vacation of one month per year {$150,000} and accrued it for 10 years then they would owe him his vacation when he quit. That would be 1.5 million.

I don't know how many directors and above are in the company but I can see how that could add up to 3.5 mill a year.

For me the peon on our last contract we got 0% raise for the next 2 years. We just had an opening due to retirement. I am happy that they want to fill it but we only had 2 applicants that made it to the interview stage and the first turned it down. The second has been slow in responding. I am not unhappy but I wonder if I should check the market out!

You have the option to move on 32T, as long as you consider yourself to be a peon, you always will be,are hundreds of thousands of people that would gladley take your job in this economy,be happy you have one,any work is goodwork at this point in time.

I should add that for me a good vacation is when i have to go back to work to relax. It is what i know and do most days. My coworkers cover the 20% of my job that needs immediate attention and the 80% is there when I get back.

I have thought long and hard about this and decided that my station in life at my age is what I have become and will be. My wife was a stay at home wife while she raised our children and went to college in her 40's. She has a good job now and she said now it is your turn. Looking at the cost/benefit ratio for me it doesn't work out. I could make possibly more for a few years and then retire. Not enough to pay back my schooling. I am relatively happy with where I am and am hesitant because the grass is not always greener on the other side.

I have told my children to be careful of the difference between a job and a skill/profession. I see your point that many would want my job and I use the term job loosely but most of them don't have my skills.

I feel your pain. It has been 13 years since i have had to sell myself for a job and I have a hard time relating to what my children are going through.

I work in Healthcare and hope they don't start sending heart attacks to China!
