Put an app into a company that I wanted to work for. Got nothing as a response. Short time later I noticed a refrigerator magnet with the company's logo while lunching with a family from church. The wife worked there and put my name in for a different position. Been at the company ten years! I have the most seniority in my group (even more than my awesome boss) and am tied for low man on the totem pole. No, difference - I am still hourly and love my job!

Default How Did You Get Your Job?

44 yr years before I retired. If I remember correctly, it was "bad luck" that got it for me.

Joined the Navy in '95, which was when Microsoft released the first Windows OS that wasn't just a file manager. 16 years later, the Navy finally wised up and created an Information Systems Tech rating for Submarines (ITS). I had already been doing it, collaterally, under the radar, sometimes at the expense of my normal advancement, and I was one of the very few who was fully credentialed, recognized and certified, so I became one of the first Chief Information System Techs in the US Submarine Force in 2011. I have a crack team of scary-capable men working for me and it's almost too good to be true, but alas, eventually, we'll have to leave the shipyard, put this pig back in the water and go deep. I've been a Network Administrator in a combat zone before as well, so after I retire, I figure I can do this job for anybody, anywhere. Like any job, however, what matters most is working to learn, and the quality of the people I wind up working with.

I'm afraid how I got my job is very boring. Studied undergraduate degree for 4 years. Studied postgraduate degree for 4 years. Applied for position in Australian university via videoconference from UK at 6am in the morning. (Here comes the exciting bit....!) The video tech screwed up and I gave a 45 minute lecture to the interview panel with the camera pointed at my crotch.

I replied to an ad that read "Must be computer savvy. Willing to work weekends and nights. Email or call ...". Most ads like that around here are junk and usually very misleading once you arrive. I figured it never hurts to get interview experience and proceeded to call. Up until the interview I thought the place was most likely a sham and little did I know it was a satellite uplink and television origination facility. 2 interviews, a promotion to management and another to Tier 2 tech with RF engineers and network admins I am still happily employed.

Now I just keep the glass ceiling spotless. At least I'm still hourly.

Bahahahaha... I nearly bowled over laughing! Isn't that life for you. One of the most stressful days of your life, and life figures the best image of your 8 years worth of intensive education is your crotch lol!! The irony! You must teach... uh... law? !!

Ok I'll stop laughing.... in a minute !

Well mine i applied for whilst still at school. Got a provisional offer on the grounds that i got good grades. Got the grades needed and i started working for the then Inland Revenue (now HM Revenue and Customs) in the recovery department.

Did a few years in the office liaising with courts and representing the IR then decided id like to have a try at being a bailiff and actualy collecting the money/taking goods. Did that for several years. I loved every minute. Have my fair share of stories and made my money.

Started talking about starting a family with my partner and decided to change career due to the nature of the job. Now working in local government managing various contracts but after 5 years im having itchy feet and im on the look out for the next challenge.
