Being unemployed now I can tell you how I got my last job.
I worked as a software trainer for CompUSA. They went out of business so I looked at every job portal out there. One day I was looking on craigslist for some thing and realized there was a jobs section. Took a long look at some position for a company that developed electronic medical records.
I figured software for the most part is software and I can teach anyone just about anything given time to learn something new...so I applied and got the job on the first interview.
Never thought of craigslist as a place for jobs but it happened..
Just wish it would work this time around but anyway that is my story and I am sticking to it.

I was looking for work and it started raining. So I ducked into a convenient building not wanting to get wet. They were hiring and I spent the next 30 years there.

How Did You Get Your Job?
Well, I basically harassed the people who at the time worked here for a job about once a day. Always in person, cuz you can hang up a phone you know? Finally I wore them down and they gave me an entry level position... Now I am #2 at my store. Trying this technique now with another company, looking to put my education to use.
It's just corn syrup... Warm, blood flavored, corn syrup ...

Shipping and Receiving at a local factory.
I used to manage a restaurant for 5 years. However, I fell in love with one of my severs so I had to transfer. Only problem, I fell in love with my area supervisor's ex-girlfriend. That made life a living hell! He tried everything, making unrealistic goals, refusing requested days off and getting my executive manager to get her employees to try and make it really hard to meet these goals. I eventually couldn't take it and quit, I found my new job before the next Monday. Funny thing is, my schedule rocks, off weekends and out of there by 4 pm. Pay is no where near what I was making but oh well. Now I get to go back to school, since I make less, I get more for school. Still have to pay it back, but its more than what I would have got.
And now to get off my

How Did You Get Your Job?
Worked my way up the food chain:
Did 5 years of apprenticeship.
Worked as a Journeyman for a year or two.
Dropped out of the union and worked non union for a few years.
Got tired of the heat and carrying tools.
Got a job on a parts counter for a few years.
Got an itch to get into sales.
Made contact with my current boss from a recommendation from my previous manager.
Wham. Bam. 5 years later and I make more than I deserve.
I've got an awesome client list, flexible hours, and 100% commission. I'll never voluntarily punch a clock again.

I am currently going back to school and part of my program requires that I volunteer in a direct care setting. I have been volunteering this semester and was going to stop at the end. I was asked to stay on as an employee so I must have been doing something right. It is really great because now I don't have to find a job that will work around my school schedule for next semester!

I put in around 200 applications across town and finally got lucky enough to get a call. While I was waiting on the interview I walked into the store and ended up fitting some guy for a suit, who unknown to me was a friend of the manager. After the interview I got no call for around two weeks until the guy picked up his suit and said what a good job I'd done. After that the manager decided to hire me even though he really didn't need another employee on the payroll. Now I'm normally second or third in the store for overall sales and sales based on hours worked.
Just before my move to Missouri I got offered a job as a bartender and bouncer after getting into an altercation with a man because he was harassing the staff (at that time all female waitstaff and bartenders) and I told him to leave. He was trying to grope them and screaming a patron and staff alike, before he decided to assault me. I taught him proper manners and loaded him into a cab, then went to finish my dinner when the manager was so great full and pleased with how I handled the situation that he offered me full time as a bartender. Would have taken the position if I wasnt moving two weeks later.Last edited by Devilpup; 12-15-2012 at 04:58 AM.

Thanked: 884Sorry David,
You'll have to be a bit more specific. My resume is about the thickness of a medium sized city's phone book.
I dynamited more than a few bridges over the years.
My current job is totally boring. I filled out a ridiculous application, got called for an interview, shot the breeze with that clown boss, and was told I could start the following 15th. At which point I asked about the money, we negotiated a bit, he balked, I told him to kiss it and walked out. Got home had a message on my answering machine that I had the job at the money I wanted.
We didn't get along too good after that and I was glad to see him retire. He's gone, I'm still trudging along.
Interviewed for another job a while back as I was looking to make some better money. Had a panel of five guys hammering me with questions. I really didn't care if I got that job or not, so I hammered 'em back. Got asked to wait outside for a bit. Another guy came by and asked my name then asked me to follow him. We went out and played with dump trucks and trailers and equipment for a couple of hours and I was sent back to wait. Got called back by THE FIVE and asked when I could start. I told as soon as we settled on a price. They shot low, I shot high, they came up a bit and I didn't budge. They made me another offer and I told 'em I wasn't starting over again at the bottom for less than I was making where I was at and to have a nice day.
They called a buddy of mine (we all know a lot of the same people in this business ) and asked him what it would take to get me. He told 'em "Whatever that hard headed little bastard told you is what it's gonna take." Then they wanted him to talk me into working for 'em.
Before they called it off they called me and asked me again if I'd work for their money as I was asking too much. I told 'em, "If you think I'm expensive, hire an amateur." Guess they found a mullet that would play their game but it damn sure wasn't this one.Last edited by Wullie; 12-17-2012 at 04:21 AM.
