Does this make anyone else mad?
I don't know a lot about markets, bubbles, or what it's like to have 14 kids (heck, I don't even have one) but I have worked years in retail and have seen gov't aid cards pay for a lot of product. It warms my heart when I see those cards buy bread, eggs, milk, ect. And because of that, I think the system has a purpose.
But that only happens here every once in a while. Throughout my work day I see those gov't cards buy Mountain Dew, Snickers, Doritos, Lays classic with Lays ranch dip. And then I get chewed out by some people when they can't buy a Redbull or Monster energy drink with those cards...
Last year I had a customer spend $120 dollars on junk food and drinks for a Superbowl party.
Some people use the system as it is meant to be, God bless em' for it. But a lot of people use it as a "coke and a candy bar" card. I don't blame them, I blame the system. If they wanted they could ban those items like they ban energy drinks. There's a concept!!! Only allow gov't aid to buy healthy and nutritious food? Like that will happen. Bet Frito-Lay and PepsiCo would have a field day in court if that happened...It's just corn syrup... Warm, blood flavored, corn syrup ...

And who will decide what is a healthy and nutritious food???
We keep having these discussions about how folks abuse the system and how folks are sick and tired of it. Well, yes folks will abuse any system. Do you think more abuse it then benefit from it like it was intended?
I don't recall to many threads concerning corporations who have paid off politicians to pass laws allowing them huge tax breaks or subsidies or low interest loans or the outfits ripping off the govt billions in outright fraud through overcharging and abuse. Yea, every now and then one unlucky outfit gets hauled out for display purposes and repays a pittance. Then they go right back with another contract.
When I was working my agency had a policy that all purchases be made from a small business and minority owned business. If you wanted to go elsewhere you needed to do a ream of paperwork. How many millions in my agency alone were wasted through that policy? No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Oh there is no question we spend more on bailing out corporations than individuals!! But corporations and those who make millions running them aren't lazy, trash, slobs lol! The American public is dutiful in ensuring we keep those who need it in the manor they have become accustomed lol!! Hence the reason we give squat to the poor and billions to corporations lol!!
EDIT ^^ sorry don't know where that came from. But to answer your question. The FDA should figure out what is healthy and isn't. That's their job.
My kids school has to follow the guidelines...Last edited by earcutter; 01-13-2013 at 11:18 PM.

yea, a Govt agency telling folks what they can eat and not eat? next it will be telling us what we can wear and then everyone will wear the same drab outfit. I'm going to call the NRA (National Retail Clothing Association) and make sure they get right on this. I don't want Obama coming to take my clothes.

To be honest, I don't know enough about big corporations and how often they get a break. I will just take your word on it.
And to answer the question of if I think it gets abused more than used right, I do think more dollars go to snacky cakes and fizzy drinks than actual grocery items. And by that I mean that they don't buy a cart of food, but instead swipe the government aid card on candy and a pop, 5+ times a week.
I understand what you mean when you ask who will decide what's healthy. Some people need high protein, no sugar, or good cholesterol diets. But I don't see much nutrition in candy or soda. And those items are not cheap. It shouldn't take a room of scientists to tell us that there are better options.
I understand that a lot of the threads cover this, and I know you probably read a lot more of this stuff than I do. But I find it good that people still care, and that the same stuff is on other peoples brains. I will look more into corporations. Who knows, maybe a Superbowl party on the government's dime will look like nothing compared to what I find. It's just corn syrup... Warm, blood flavored, corn syrup ...

I hate to see anybody abusing the safety nets we provide. all they are really doing is stealing. however, using the system to help you out when you are in need is not wrong. people sometimes make horrible choices or questionable ones that have unforseen consequences and these folks sometimes need help. in the bad old days local church groups and charities helped folks out or you simply did ithout and perhaps reduced the surplus population. today church groups still try to help, "catholic charities" even gets government support for their charity efforts.
the problem got to big back in the 1930's and the government stepped in to "help" thus creating thousands of good civil service jobs for the union workers and ever since there has been no way to curb the waste.
all that being said it is a matter of human dignity to be allowed to choose what you eat or do not eat that is something i do not worry about.
