Thanked: 1936I am actually meeting a gentleman tomorrow 25 miles away to buy a couple boxes of 22mag for my "just in case" pistol that stays in my pocket. During the summer I have to change out the 5 rounds regularly due to perspiration & I am down to about a half a box. Fortunately he's not gouging me & I'm paying around $20 a box.

Yeah, I've read about a lot of the custom makers, Griffen & Howe, amongst others made rifles using rechambered '98s. Matter of fact, IIRC the now venerated Winchester model 70 was based on the Mauser 98 design.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

very nice John !!!
one thing I have never heard , was a complaint about the quality or reliability of a WW2 German firearm .. well other then from my grandpa but his complaint was about the bullets coming his way
a guy where I goose hunt brought me into his home one day to share a view of his collection .. half of his collection was unfired weapons of WW1 & WW2 as well as a couple civil war springfields that were sent in when the North switched to percussion , then shipped to the battle field and never issued again .. the story was that him and a friend bought an unopened crate then kept 2 each ...
