Rimfire Ammo Shortage...
I'm not surprised that in my area ammo shelves in stores in my area and also from national online retailers are virtually barren. I guess a bit surprised that rimfire rounds are gone, but then it must be the low cost factor. I've talked to two different retailers about this to get their opinions on the subject. Both said the same shortage happened after Obama's first election and after the panic buying settled down, supply rebounded with no issue. One believes the same will happen again. The other....not so sure; he said he wouldn't be surprised if there are still supply issues six months from now. Articles I read and stores I'm in all say business is booming for gun sales. I wonder if stores will feel the same way if the ammo shortage continues. No ammo....no bang bang.
Thoughts?
Since you can't hand load rimfire, are there any calibers that can be hand loaded in a center fire for a total cost per round of, say... a dime? This factoring new brass.
I think I already know the answer to my question. I would guess not even close.

Thanked: 101I found some Auto Match at WalMart last night for 15 bucks for 325 value pack. Buddy tells me that this ammo is good. I can still reload .32 S&W-L with my cast bullets cheaper than .22LR, but the kids like to shoot their .22 so I got one box. Guy behind me bought the remaining 3 boxes....

I've been trying to cut back on the number of gun fights I get into, but I'm expecting .22 to bounce back soon. Luckily I load .45 ACP and .380 is still in decent supply.
I'm surprised you can't find .22 around somewhere. You might need to road trip a little more. I'm not aware of any economic round comparable to a .22.

There's some in Houston, but I'm not sure where you're located.
Collector's Firearms had some yesterday. Limit one box of 250 or 2 boxes of 50 per person.

I've got 4 bricks of 22lr that I picked up way before the past election. I shudder to think what they are asking for any ammo nowadays. If it was milk after a disaster they would be arrested for price gouging. OTOH, I guess supply and demand will always rule markets. I used to reload and still have enough tools to get going again. I sold my lead pot but still have a sizer and bullet moulds.
Sold my Star progressive reloaders but still have my old rock chucker and dies for a few calibers. Thing is I don't feel like putting in the time. Also the local indoor ranges don't allow reloads. I have to drive 65 miles one way to go to an outdoor range that allows handloads. Pity it is like that. I used to enjoy reading Elmer Keith and Skeeter and tailoring loads for 44spl. At least Hornady and a few others are making 'good' ammo for the spl now ..... if you can find any.

I took my nephew out for a weekend of shooting a .22 two months ago, I am still trying to replace that brick.

Thanked: 1371Chris - if you cast your own bullets and figure about six loads per piece of brass, you can load just about any handgun caliber for under 15 cents / round.
(This assumes component prices haven't gone up in the last couple of years. The last time I had to buy powder or primers was a couple of years ago)
