My buddy and I went to the show this morning. We take separate cars because he will stay there for hours. I do a quick once over and I'm out. He is 65 years old and though he carries two (2) handguns daily he has never fired a shot in anger, nor to defend life and limb. He is a great guy and I'm not bad mouthing him, just saying ..... he stockpiles ammo and dried food for when the 'omelet' hits the fan. Has a 'get away bag' and a rifle that stores into the stock among his arsenal. So today he asks me if I think he ought to buy this body armor that is going for $200.00.
Now I have always thought he was a little nuts with this doomsday scenario but I must admit that the last few years I don't think anarchy, at least temporarily, is out of the question. I told him he has made it 65 years without the body armor and to waste his money on something he might enjoy more. Anyway ......

It's not a matter of need. The reality of it is, with a stack of 10 round mags, one can drop and swap and keep on shooting for as long as he likes. It takes about a second to swap mags.
However, I sometimes do burn a few boxes of ammo at the range. Having a 30 round clip or 2 is convenient.

Thanked: 1371Guys, let's make sure this discussion stays on the topic of ammo availability.
Discussion of politics or gun control or what should or shouldn't be legal will get it shut down.
Thanks.

For me I have three 30 round mags for my mini 14 side folder (factory stainless, cool little rifle) but I would rather have a few 20 or even 10. PITA to load 30. As far as why have 30 ..... if the omelet ever does hit the fan, and it is a matter of defending life and property, a 30 round mag is 3 times as good as a 10.

It is a pitty that Rimfire is getting hard to get... It's one of the most "useable" rounds out there...

maybe people are starting to realize that in a survival situation a 22lr is a good choice .. its light , can carry a lot of ammo , small game can be harvested easy , quieter then other rifles/shotguns , all the options as far as rails , optics , the accuracy ,can easy train a younger shooter and give them the ability to use it if need be , and with models like those little survival ones that break down to fit in a back pack why not keep one around ?? not to mention the price of a .22 rifle (or what they used to cost )

I loaded up on 380 auto rounds as soon as everyone started buying up the assault rifles, I figured ammo was next. The gun counter at the insanely big Bass Pro shops here in Vegas was 80% empty last time I was there and it's getting difficult to find ammo too.
Luckily there are quite a few touristy shooting ranges around that keep a good stock but I don't shoot enough that I feel like I'll be low any time soon

took a trip to 2 walmarts tonight looking for 600 grit , no 6oo grit and ammo cases had only a few boxes of ammo in them at both stores .. saw 2 guys looking through the glass talking about how they cant find .22 ammo or .45 or 9mm ... i guess the days of blowing off 1,000rounds on a weekend trip to the cabin are not gonna happen anytime soon ..lol

Well my guess also is that with all the AR .22 LR Upper's that are coming out, LE is buying up their fair share for training... And of course they will be shipped to first...
A question to throw out... How much is enough? 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000 rounds?Last edited by NoseWarmer; 02-17-2013 at 03:33 PM.
