Thanked: 47100 year old time capsule
A 100 year old time capsule was opened in Oklahoma City. Some of the items in the time capsule were a newspaper from the day the capsule was buried, April 22, 1913, a telephone, dress, flag, pen used by President William McKinley, camera and a pair of women's shoes. There was also a phonograph record of voices of some people. Pretty cool to see how things have progressed over 100 years.
Here is the link if anyone wants to watch the video of the capsule being opened.

Kansas City celebrated its 150th birthday a few years back, in it's time capsule a letter was addressed to the mayor serving at the current time. Mayor Kay Barnes opened the letter and began to read it, "Dear sir....". Who da thunk it.

Thanked: 369I wonder how many people from 1913 would agree that we have "Progressed." Unless things like inflation, debt, and taxation to the hilt are considered progressive.

Voting rights for women and blacks, a black president, no more segregation, people getting a high school diploma, health education and modern medicine, no more prohibition...
They'd be freaked out of their minds at your 'progress'.
My Grandmother was born in 1910 or thereabouts (she was a toddler at the outbreak of WW1). She told me in no uncertain terms that there was nothing particularly 'good' about the good old days. She remembered going to a funeral every week, to bury the latest child who'd died of pneumonia. Or people working in factories in extremely bad working conditions, with doctors being paid to not rock the boat.Last edited by Bruno; 04-24-2013 at 07:54 PM.

Hi Bruno, your modern virtues may be more the ideal that the real.
My father was born in '05 and aside from the mechanized changes that have happened, the Man is still the Man.

Thanked: 47Bruno pretty much summed up how our society has progressed and what I meant. Now I will say there are aspects that are far worst now, such as work ethic, dependency on technology, gov't regulations, etc. But just the fact that "most" of the country aren't trying to segregate others because of their skin color or gender is certainly progress. Health care also has made huge progress. I would like to say education but somehow I think people are becoming dumber. And if we can't consider TIVO, GPS, the Internet and most importantly the greatest website ever Straightrazorplace.com progress, than why are we here.

That is exactly what I meant. Living conditions are better, working conditions are better, literacy rates and other indicators of development are much better, human rights are better, discrimination is a lot less, etc.
Sure, you may prefer the political ideals of the past (on the assumption that you would not be among the poor and the downtrodden) but for all practical purposes, todays society has progressed compared to 100 years ago by any metic you can look at.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.
