Thanked: 1587Who's Your Doggy?
There's been little hints here and there throughout various threads that there's a few dog lovers among us. I thought it might be nice to start a thread devoted to our furry best friends.
My dog is called Mable (my wife spells it Maebelle ). She's a Husky/Border Collie cross. My avatar is a poor photographic representation of her. Mable enjoys long walks, chasing balls, catching frisbees, stealing other dog's balls and making them chase her, and brutally (and without mercy) chasing down and killing the hares that populate our property. This latter ability has prompted the neighbours to dub her "Mable, the Hare Slayer", and she is in great demand for vegetable garden protection services.
We have had her trained in the ways of obedience. However, I'm glad to say that she retains an independent and indefatigable spirit. That said, she has taken on board the basic tenets of the heel, stay, drop, and so on, and, I strongly suspect, gives her full in-principal support to these concepts, which she endeavours to demonstrate for treat-type remuneration.

Some great looking dogs wildtim. I'm sure you like them all equally but from a purely aesthetic angle , I like the black --all are beautiful but the black gets me. Mable is a great looking pooch too, Jimbo.

I suppose Raven. I have a basic knowledge of dogs breeds --I can recognize and name most dog breeds. I tend to like the German dog breeds ---but I know very little about German Shepherds --- what fascinates you about German Shepherds? --I think I've read that German Shepherds are probably the all around super dog --great hearing, great nose, great athletic ability. But all your dogs are beautiful. I think my favorite dogs are the terriers -- I like to see them go to ground and just dig their attitude --do you know anything about German Pinschers ? -- I have a growing fascination for them.
Anyway, got to love them dogs!!

Thanked: 1587Wildtim - great-looking dogs.
I love shepards - the guys who trained Mable were, I think, a bit like you. They train dogs (mainly shepards) for police and military. The trainer had a shepard called ANZAC - I kid you not (although you probably won't be suprised to hear this), but if a dog ran off during off lead stays, ANZAC would run off after them, grab their lead in his mouth, and lead them back! Never saw anything like it in my life!!
Anyway, finally took some photos of Mable. I'm no photographer, as you can probably tell.
James.

Nice pooch! Last summer the wife and I took our 2 greyhounds to a week of dog camp. It was a pretty good time despite the lack of bacon and ham in the morning (it was a Jewish childrens summer camp when people aren't there with their dogs). Anyway, by far the smartest, most obidient dog there was an Austrailian Sheppard. This dog could do anything and when it wasn't given a command, it would stare at it's owner and wait for another command. On top of all that, it was cute as hell with one brown eye and one blue eye!

I have a 7 yr old Airedale Terrier named Tess and a 9 yr old Shih Tzu named Duncan.
The Airedale was originally being trained as a bird and show dog (and showed a lot of promise) but after my daughter was born I didn't really have time to keep it up. Instead she entertains herself by protecting the house from squirrels, raccoons, cats, etc. destroying stuffed toys/kongs/bones and keeping a watchful and protective eye on our daughter.
The Shih Tzu is the little Napoleon of the house. No remorse for any action and determined to have his way at all times.
