"Private Road - No Access" would be even better.

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

I have been guilty about what is being talked about here. Once in Tennessee on vacation I wanted to see the country side and took a ride with my wife. where I am from in the Upper Midwest one can go 20 miles north find a road to the East etc. and make a circle. There roads go up a valley and just end. That's different but fine to me. I took a turn off the main road and my wife said there is no outlet/dead end, I forget the exact wording of the sign. My answer was the road may go for 20 or 30 miles. It went a long way and after 15 - 20 miles I came around a corner and unannounced there was someones yard. I think I turned around outside their fence/property but maybe not. I did not intend to invade their privacy and did my best not to but wanted to see the area off the main tourist roads.

As and aside i can find many more "Hillbillies" in southern Minnesota or western Wisconsin than I could find there! LOL

Glen, a gate is your only option,is a no brainer, maybe just a couple heavy chains betwixed two trees.

With a chain or cable there would have to be many reflectors at the least. At a minimum there would be a lot of paperwork if someone riding a motorcycle, atv, or snowmobile got decapitated!

No body, no paperwork. That's why there are shovels, plus you get a free motorcycle, atv, or snowmobile for your hard work.

Yeah,,,just put some hay bales a few yards after the chain, so the driverless atv don't get damaged.

    Glen,

I, too, live on the end of a private road. All the signs in the world are no substitute for a gate. Put a gate on the road with a sign on it. It will deter 99% of the trespassers. The other 1% you have to file a complaint With law enforcement. It will not take many of these until the word gets out not to be an uninvited guest on your road. I know This sounds a bit harsh but it will solve the issue.

We live at the end of a Private Road, in fact we actually own the road everyone else just has access and an agreement to help with upkeep..
To set the stage the road is just shy of 1 mile long, there are only 5 homes on the road, the once you pass my nearest neightbor who is just shy of 1/2 mile down the road there is nothing until you cross onto my property which is where we have these signs...
As you drive past the signs and around the corner the land is clearly marked as Private Property, No Trespassing on both sides of the road..

My question is, You are coming down the road, there is a clear turnaround right before the signs that I maintain year round, is there something I am missing here that says "Come on in" ????
Just wondering if I am somehow reading my signs wrong here ????

Keep in mind my actual "driveway" is another 1/4 mile down the road, and you have to go by 2 more No Trespassing signs to get in there, yet people drive right on in, when I have stopped them and asked the simple question, "What part of No Trespassing, Private Property, Private Road, is confusing to you" I have got a few different responses, but most fall in the "I didn't think it meant me" category...

Thinking of spending the money for some 4x4 posts and Metal signs with a section of split rail fence to either side of the road, hoping that might work, we don't want to have to put a gate there if at all possible as they get in the way during the winter...

Do you think I am fighting a uphill battle against ignorance here ????

In Minnesota at least according to the movie Fargo our preferred method is a wood chipper. I like Hirlau's idea about the bales but then you would have to move the bales everytime you drove your own driveway. then you would have to grind off the serial numbers of the vehicle restamp them and drive 3 states away to sell it at a steep discount behind some seedy bar. You could probably burn off the blood on the cable getting rid of the bales. Then you would have to cut down a Pine tree to drag down the road to obliterate tracks left by whatever vehicle. Afterwards you would have to go and get new tires for your truck so yours didn't match the ones dragging the tree. I almost forgot they might be carrying a GPS and you would have to search and destroy that after driving to LA where anyone could disappear. You never know when one of those CSI might show up.

As you can see i think a gate may be a better answer!

Figure out where you want people to stop driving, install masonary pillars 10' apart in the middle of the road with your last name and street # on one of them.
Might be more difficult to clear snow, but if you want people to keep out you need a seperation from the road.
We had this exact situation at a customers hunt camp, still ended up putting a gate.
I didnt read the whole thread so I hope this hasnt been covered.
