    Default George Butler horn scales

I like to show all my first attempt in fabricating horn scales. I got it in my head to get rid of all the G-10 in my collection and replace it with horn.
I started with a panel of black buffalo saw cut the blank out and formed the shape with a razor blade (draw filing the contour) During assembly I used lead for the wedge (which I admit is to thick, but it's to late in the game to fix.) The collars are stainless steel pop rivet bodies, whose flange diameters were turned down a bit in the lathe.
I use the pop rivets because they look great , are tougher then hell, and most of all they are dirt cheap to buy (roughly 12 cents a rivet how can you beat it?)
    Thanks for looking,
    Darl (Tarkus)

Looks very good to me. I'll have to look into the pop rivet angle. Thanks for sharing that idea.

I have to say your first attempt at horn came out great as well as the use of the rivets. The shape of the blade is one of my favorite profiles. Enjoy!

The pop rivets are actually sold by a vendor for pinning razors,I think he is in england.
But,if your using a fragile scale material such as Ivory,I would suggest you anneal them before peening.
I even anneal my NIAG before peening.Just the way I do it.

Yes I have the razor rivet collars as well, but these pop rivets do the same thing at a fraction of the price, and are readily available.
I would never use the nail on the pop rivet being it stainless. I use Nickle rod for that the nail you could never pin with it.
