Thanked: 13245Re-restore W&B "The Celebrated" 8/8
Just finished up reworking a previous restore, Jason wanted it put into Honey Horn and restored back to a more vintage look..
After I un-screwed the Torx set up on the Wood scales, this is what I found..
They had drilled the pivot hole out to 3/16, and one of the biggest issues when doing this is the fact that the tangs are intentionally beveled in two directions.. They bevel from top to bottom and they bevel from front to back.. Now calculate that with the fact that these old tangs were not actually done by a machine, but by hand and the chances of that drilled hole being straight are slim at best.. I used three different sized Brass tubes nestled together to take it back down, there was just enough slop to allow for the misaligned hole
The new Honey horn scales are a thin .110 with the Tigereye wedge at the end set at .050 Brass pins and triple stacked washers hold it all together..
Honing = Chosera 1-5-10, Select Grade Coticule Finish
Thanks for looking

Your work is inspiring!
Why was the tang beveled? I have a Pipe razor with a beveled tang and had been wondering about the purpose of the beveled tang.

Thanked: 13245
Look closely at the razor from the top down as you open and close it, watch the action and feel the action, you will see how everything is supposed to work from the actual "Wedge shape" of the wedge end to the tapers of the tang.. Straight razors have a functionality that has evolved over the 250 or so years they have been around in this form...
Watch the scales flex and you can see exactly why things evolved certain ways, also the flexed scale is stronger it all comes together with a certain design

Glen,
The scales look fantastic! I figured there would be some sort of issue since there was a hex screw on it. Can't wait to get it back and get a shave from it!...Oh wait, I have to pay you first!

Looks perfect, above and beyond a level of improvement the original craftsmen would approve.

I don't know which I like more... the fantastic work on the razor or your custom backdrop, Glen...
