Geo. Wostenholm I-XL Doubly Carborized, Registered 10 Sep 1860.
It's been a while since I've posted. This razor that I just finished for a customer was so unusual to me that I thought to share it. I love framebacks and this one being unusual that the spine and tang are gold. At first I thought it was brass as it is not magnetic. It fell off the my jig which got me interested. It has a tiny sample hole drilled in the base of the monkey tail. Somebody had proofed it much earlier. Good thing that it honed up well. It has a registration number on the tang of 2434 dated 10 September of 1860. I'm not too sure the scales are original but they are old enough to be. It was found in an antique shop and sold for $30.00. It's going to be a family heirloom for this customer.

I would highly doubt that it's gold, especially on such a commoner's razor. Have you proofed it yourself? Brass framebacks were somewhat common at the time, and even any alloys of gold I wouldn't think would hold up to honing realities. The razor itself looks a lot like LeCoultre or French stylings, especially in that style of scales (if I recall, Wostenholm actually made a 'Swiss razor' styled almost directly on the LeCoultre. Cool razor, thanks for sharing!

Thanked: 1184It would be very heavy if it was made of gold. Like about 2 1/2 times more than steel. Would they even make a razor that heavy ?
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.
