Probably a discussion for The Workshop, but since we're all here.... Yup, I was experimenting with that exact idea in October - and it is absolutely possible on razor scales. Probably a few pix over in the workshop (taken before I completely exhausted the G10 in the test scales trying various things).

G10, Micarta, and similar materials are much harder than most all woods, bone, horn, and other natural materials so it takes a little effort to contour just the way you want, but it can be done. Probably the best way is to try to start your material removal with the contrasting layer just beneath the surface - otherwise the physical contours of the scales will feel really "off" (if that makes sense). Again, more appropriate for The Workshop but if you have some time (and a decent respirator) just take a 1/8" slice of micarta and experiment. When I get a chance to experiment with the idea again maybe a thread on it over there may be useful.
