Walnut stain on a test piece of wood used to make the scales. Kinda like the natural color but this isn't bad either...

    Opinions?

Hmm, hard to say what I like more. Put the blade next to it, see if the contrast helps you decide.

I like the subtlety of the untreated smooth wood. However, it won't be water resistant, so that'll only work when you keep the scales dry or use an invisible/translucent finish. I usually buff my scales with regular steel polish, gives it a waxy finish, but I believe you don't have a buffer, so I'm not much help.

Yeah I returned the variable speed buffer after I destroyed that 9/8 FBU W&B.... probably gonna just use a clear glossy poly and keep the natural color...ive got some bigger buffing wheels for the dremel, may try it on scrap before I put it on the scales.

I've read enough horror for a week!

Dremel may work if you can get some paste or compound applied to the wheels.
