Thanked: 59Practice Run
I'd like to make a razor from scratch, but since I have never made one before I thought that I'd start off with a repair. So I took an old razor that I had laying around, removed the scales, re-ground the blade and carved a one-piece handle out of Lignum vitae. I think all said and done it took about three hours. It's not perfect and I think that I can do better. However, it's a start and was a learning experience. Sorry for the poor quality picture.

It is a start indeed, and from the picture, a pretty darn fine one as well.
I've long wanted to get into grinding of steel myself, but haven't done so this far.
Kudos for jumping in a trying all those elements on a razor!Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

That is a great looking razor! One of my favorite razors is a Hart and that reminds me of it. Great work.

congrats on a good start DVW! starting with repairs/restores/lots of honing practice to find what works well in razor design, what doesn't work so well, this is the best approach in my mind to starting out in making razors for yourself. even when I design something I think will function well as far as honing/stropping/shaving it may not turn out to be as ergonomic and a joy to use as id like. conducting repairs on vintage blades, honing and stropping vintage blades with different grinds and design elements has impacted my designs greatly! keep at it, cant wait to see what kind of stuff you put out in the near future!
