Resuited L.Holzhauer's Sons
G’day all,
finished this up on the weekend
was a bare blade when received in need of a bit of attention & a re-suiting
Blade: L. Holzhauer's sons
stamped - Magnetic, Made in Germany" &, "L. Holzhauer's sons Troy NY
the blade is a touch over 11/16”
Full double hollow ground,
Square point (not a spike point)
Work performed
Blade hand sanded back to 320 grit then through to 5000 grit then hand polished with Autosol
there is still some minor blemishes on the blade, so is not quite a true mirror but highly polished
Scales: new Black Buffalo Horn– hand shaped & sanded to 5000 grit then hand polished with a furniture polish & finally Ren wax
Wedge: new Brass hand shaped & sanded to 5000 grit then hand polished
Pins & Washers: Brass 1/16” pins & hand domed washers - #0 wide at wedge & #0 narrow at pivot
Thrust washers: Brass cut from new 10 thou shim
Honing:
1k Naniwa bevel set as required
4k/8k Norton polishing 40 laps each
12k Naniwa Finisher 40 laps each
0.3 Chrox 15 laps very light
0.1 Ferrox 15 laps very light
Hard pressed felt 50 laps
English Bridle 100 laps
passes the HHT over full length of blade
shave tested smooth last night
I'm rather happy with how it came out
Saved,
to shave another day.

nice work! man, its a long way from troy ny to aussie land! I grew up about 1/2hr from troy ny, always wanted to take a trip to Australia, this razor beat me to it the l holzhauers are nice blades, like most german made/ground. havnt had the magnetic, what were the original scales? I love the new horn with the brass wedge, really pops!

great to hear she arrived safe & sound & performed as expected Bowhunter,
No scales on it when I got it Silverloaf, but from the few images I found online, they were all cell scales but some had the fancy bolsters & inlays which would have been nice.Saved,
to shave another day.

if I remember right the last one I had was sometime about a year ago and had wood grain cell scales with nice looking bolsters. they are attractive razors for sure but you did this one up better than any originals looked in my opinion. blade AND scales lookin real good, and a proud owner, cant beat that

That is a nice balance on a job well done. Balance helps in the honing and even more in the stropping but doesn't do much for the shave when it is at an angle to the blade. I try to get a balance there or a bit more toward the blade.
You did very nice work.

Those photos are also very well done!Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

Looks great! As I look at how slick this black horn is done, I wonder if all the old horn scaled razors looked like that when they were new. It is polished to where it looks like plastic or Bakelite. Slick! It WAS the plastic of the day back when.
I imagine going back in time to 1850 and stepping into a cutler's shop. That would be cool!"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.
