Help a noob out here, if you hone that, do you have to tape it to protect the spine and the Damascus effect?
Yes, tape is needed if you don't want a shiny line of hone wear along the spine.

Thanks Jamie! I've done swedges in the past on razors and they get easier every time.

It never contacts the strop. I generally have more issues with filework affecting or marring a strop than humps like these.

Back to the hump...is it part of a design/artistic decision or has it anything to do with balance, or both?

I checked out his website, and he hones with 1 layer of tape in most cases.

Just design/artistic. I've always like swedge grinds on bowies and the like and wanted to incorporate something similar in a straight. It is something I have done in the past as well and liked the results.

Correct - I really only like to use one layer of tape for all razors. I never liked remembering in my personal collection how many layers were used on what razor so I just default to 1 layer be it a wedge or full hollow. When making I make sure the size of the razor is appropriate for the width of steel such that one layer gives the appropriate bevel angle.

    Pretty darn cool.
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.
