ERN's Es-Ex in mahogany
I hate black plactic scales, cheap, uggly and commonplace. Having found this interesting Es-Ex str8 by ERN - 13/16”, ½ Hollow Ground, I decided to throw out it's vulgar scales and make new ones in some exotic wood. My choise was Mahogany Pommele, finished with only one coat of very thin CA, just to make them waterproof. Brass spacer, pins and washers.
Thanks for watching.

Thanked: 237I'm working on a set right now, buckeye burl. I can't fathom doing one coat of CA! What's your application technique? I'm using the 3 coats = 1 application method, and I just started application 2. I'll probably do several more before I decide to buff them.

Well, to obtain an even and shiny surface on the scales, I often used to put 12 to 15 layers of CA, sanding them every 5 layers.
This time, to preserve the facture of the wood, I decided to put quickly one single layer of CA, thin like water. It has penetrated inside the pores,
closing, but not filling them. The tin glue has simply sinked deep, making the scales waterproof. Then I did some light wetsanding - 800,1200,1500,2000.
Finally lot of manual buffing, with old polar clothes.
Hope this will help.

Next time save those ugly "original" scales & put them in the classified section,,,, some will pay for an original set,,,
