Thread: First hand forged razor

Hello all! New member here. I would humbly like to post my latest blade, and first razor. I would love to hear your thoughts and critiques! I plan on learning all I can,and putting that knowledge towards making a beautiful tool to pass down to my son.

This is my first razor, hand forged from a section of 5/16 leaf spring I found while hiking.

Blade length is 3 inches, and it is 6.5 inches overall. The grind is 3/4 in wide, ground on a 6in contact wheel at 40 grit and hand sanded from there. The spine is 9/32s while the blade is at .001 currently



Unfortunately I do not have any good scale material or stones, so until then she will sit here and mock me

I know guys that like the older leaf spring material for making chisels and adz but I have no idea if it is consistent enough quality for good razors or not. Someone will be along that is in the loop. I do like the surface of the unground part in contrast to the ground.

Did you heat treat it in any way?

I am thinking your bevel height is going to vary like the spine. Tall on the toe and narrow at the heel. Unless you did some math and made the spine thinner at the heel. Looks cool :<0)

It is heat treated. But being a "found" material I have no true knowledge as to what it is. But I heat treated it under the assumption that it is 5160, which makes a very tough durable blade. I use it often on knives and kukris. In tests (with sharpie) the contact points are the edges of the grind, but being my first razor I don't know for sure without having it taken to an edge and honed I guess..
