Oops!!
I’m sure I’m not the first and I won’t be the last to mess up with a dremel.
I made a new set of scales today and made the fatal error of thinking might as well give a final polish with my dremel which I normally wouldn’t do!! The result of course was a slip and I’ve knocked a chip out of my razor.
Is it worth trying to repair this razor with my hones? if so how do I go about it.
I’ve got a DMT D8c and 1000, 3000, 5000, 8000 & 12000 Naniwa hones. Do I tape it to set the bevel with my 1000??
I don’t mind it being a lot of work to do if it’s repairable it will teach me to not be so careless in the future

Thanked: 2591You can repair the damage on the hones. Start with spine raised ~30* from the stone, and work till the chip is gone, then do your normal process of honing.
In regards to Dremel and polishing blades, you can make yourself a magnetic jig that will hold carbon blades in place while you polish. The jig allows to polish with wheel spinning in direction away from the edge.
You can read about the jig here for example

If you do a search in the forum you will get more results for the jig.Stefan

Thanked: 1184The stabilizer is far enough out of the way but when done your going to be a lot closer to the etch with the edge. I would keep[ it off the DMT and don't recommend using A DMT for anything but shaping near to bevel when making a custom from scratch or doing REAL heavy work. Study up on bread knifing although I use a different method myself this seems to be the most popular.
You can definitely fix this :<0)
Using the dremel is okay at any stage . What you did was go the wrong way near the edge. ALWAYS ALWAYS always ,,,rotation goes off any edge when using anything that spins.Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Thanks for the advice everyone I took the chip out as suggested at 30 degree angle then taped it and set bevel with my 1000 once that was done went through the progression of 3000. 5000. 8000. and finally 12000. the razor appears to be honed correctly passes HHT no problem I will give it a test shave tomorrow to see how it is.
Here is a before and after shot.

I'm actually pleased it happened now as I'm very new to honing and I've learned a lot repairing it. I will however be much more careful in the future.
