Life may be too short to make mono-steel blades but you still make nice mono-steel blades. This one gets its first shave test tomorrow.

Ok Wootz turned out to be notoriously hard to make decent pics of. Either they're overlighted, or underlighted, or the pattern doesn't show up. I had to use my lightbox for the overall lighting, combined with direct flash to get the pattern to show up. And truth be told the pattern is a lot more subtle still in real life. I'll have to figure out better ways to capture wootz.

I honed it, and it is freakishly sharp. During the thumbnail test, it just grabbed my thumbnail. I had the impression that it would go straight through if I dared pull, and leave the top of my thumb on the table. To get a good look of the pattern, look at the pics in large size.

That looks great! Sounds like nothing less than perfect technique will leave a cheek on the counter next to your thumb....

I am happy to report that the test shave went extremely well. Better than I've ever gotten carbon steel or Damascus to shave. Not only great looks but also a superb shave.

What is the temperature of the hardening of the blade? There's a lot of carbon.

Just above critical, with 7 normalization cycles. The excess carbon goes to the dendritic wootz structures.

    Very nice work. Compact razor.

Carbides are very good looking and pleasing to the eye.

Very cool. I have been wishing to get my hands on some of this wootz crucible steel for some time.
