We've got Mesquite in this country too; I think I've gotta go get me some. Mulga wood, which is a native here, also has that kind of grain.
Uh oh, looks like it's a declared noxious weed in these parts: if you find it you need to report it!

Nice job on the scales. I too thought it looks like desert ironwood.
