Did that a few times in the 80s myself..a certain used econoline van comes to mind.
Now that you mention an automobile-----------I guess that I have used Lay-A-Way----------when I bought my first car ('56 Sedan with a 327-4 speed-4:11's with Posi etc) I didn't have the $800 that the seller wanted but he took the $200 that I had, and WE wrote down the mileage and HE parked it. It only took about a month to finish paying for that car. Some of the best $800 dollars I ever spent! GOD, those were the days!

We always had things in lay-away back in the 60's.
    S&H Green Stamps as well.
Was not haphazard credit back then.
You had to put up to get it. Was cool as you did, I recall!

    It was paid-for!

I got up before the crack of dawn as a young lad in the late 50's to gather eggs from the chicken coop. Those our family didn't use I was allowed to sell for 50¢ a dozen. I had a train set selling for $15 on layaway for two to three months until I had it paid off. Boy, I sure did appreciate that train set. I also learned the work ethic, and that success is related to perseverance.
