James Johnson Cast Steel Restoration
No really showing this off but just showing it.
This blade had huge fractures and pitting so I thought I'd use it for re-grind practice. I soon fell in love with it , just about the perfect shape and weight to my eyes.
I gave it a light grind on a 10 inch wheel which took away the pitting and severely reduced the cracks.
Re scaling was a nightmare , it took some time and effort to realise that the blade was bent from the pivot hole to the tail end. So if you looked down the spine over the tang it was perfectly straight ..
Honed it up on naturals tonight , with a full hollow Bengal and took them both for a shave ..
The Johnson was ok, not bad, I only did like 2 strokes when I tried the Bengal, my god , probably have one of my best shaves..
Kinda ruined my plans, pesky full hollow Bengals

Looks nice. Bent blades can realy throw a wrench in centering.
It's just Sharpening, right?

Thanked: 1081Well saved Joe, turned out very nice
Glenn/gssixgun recommends tapping the tang on a counter top to see if it wobbles before making any scales as it can save a lot of time and heartache if you know what your up against right from the start.

Cheers Mark,
Yeh that would have saved a lot of grief, the thing that caught me out was that the scales were all over the place, one fatter than the other etc and I just wanted to get them back on for a honingand shave.
I didn't alter them or straighten them so I figured they was the problem.
Doh!

Also I should add.
I can not show any nice restoration work anymore because the good stuff goes on my site for sale.
So I can only show restorations that are not for sale.
I think thems the rules :/
