Real Red Point and 24mm 2-Band Badger Combo in Redheart with Interesting Tang Stamp
Now that we have a lathe, my goal is to do some razor and brush combos, and maybe even include shaving bowls at some point (after I actually learn to turn a bowl lol!). I think I already posted this redheart brush handle on here. After a few practice pieces, this was the 1st one I didn't hide in the closet or throw in our burn pile. It was probably the easiest and most predictable wood I've ever worked with. And while the CA finish was easy-peasy to turn, sand and polish on the lathe, the scales proved to be much trickier for me. I had to sand them back a couple of times, and it's still not perfect. The most crucial thing I learned is that you're not so much sanding, as gently caressing the CA with the sandpaper as you chase out those blasted shiny low spots, especially on the sharp edges where I kept sanding it off!
In any event, she got a black acrylic wedge, brass collars and NiAg pins-I think I've finally given up on soft brass pin stock (it always seems to loosen up on the pivot for me). The interesting thing on the front tang stamp to me is that below "Real Red Point" the 2nd line has "In USA" sandwiched between "By Experts." The bottom lines say "Not made in Germany" (which I had never seen before). I know that many razors were made in Germany and distributed by various barber-related companies here in the US. Does anybody know anything more about Real Red Points?:
You can see where I sort of sanded the CA off the front end-I may try to re-do it:
It's kinda cool that the rear tang says "Harris Brothers and Co. Distributors, Chicago" (as Harris is my last name):
I look forward to honing this bad boy up and testing the shave. No doubt that spike will bite me-they always do the second I forget!
I am currently finishing up the "cutting board" razor and brush combo (made from one of my woodworking buddies' cut-offs), and then I have to hit the ground running next week to get ready for this mad experiment we're calling the "hybrid schedule" (not to mention 3 new teachers and 6 more veterans coming into my department in our "merge" with the 9th grade-it promises to be a crazy school year). If y'all don't see me so much for awhile, just enjoy the break! SHD/A-aron outLast edited by ScoutHikerDad; 08-02-2020 at 07:21 PM.

Just a quick follow-up: it's like a law of physics that every spike point I shave with will cut me, so of course this one did, just as I was oohing and aahing over the smoothness of the 8k to Arkie edge I had just put on it with that 14-inch black hone I got this summer from Dan's. Seriously, it was one of the smoothest shaves I've had in awhile until "D'oh!"-it happened! Teach me to gloat, even to myself. Anyway, it must not have been too bad; alum stopped it up pretty good after the 1st pint or so.
So I'll just mute that point a bit, and it should be one of my top shavers. Seriously, I rarely like hollow-ground edges, but this one is special.
And Roy, I hope you find this entertaining. There are many roads to sharp.
