Brave move with the shellac. Love the stuff but haven't been game to try it. What do you think about it's long term water resistance ? I guess it's a bit like oil in that it's easily repaired & maintained.
It was a 4" radius on the platen http://straightrazorpalace.com/works...-grinding.html

A freshly mixed waxy, fairly unprocessed shellac is water resistant enough for a razor. The shellac becomes less durable if it is premixed or has been bleached and filtered. A nice plain buttonlac or waxy orange shellac is fine for a razor.

    Thanx Charlie.

    Like the grinder setup

Mixed up a batch of orange a month ago and only use it as a sealer. Must give it a try as a finish. Looks great.

Never thought about shellac for a finish on scales, and I have so much of it around here. Big fun to work with, matter of fact I just Frenched a friends guitar about 2 weeks ago. Turned out nice and glassy. K, gotta go cut some scales....

it does look cool, would you mind explaining the vinegar etch? would it work on already polished out blades or would they have to be sanded out first? great work man.

Purty Charlie, form and function. Well done.

I am a French polishing fool, it is good to see another person who French's. I brushed this one though. My name is Charlie and I am a shellacaholic.

I have not tried it on a highly polished razor. I have used it on metal sanded to 800 grit. I assume it would work, but have not experimented. I just put it in the viniegar and let it soak. I did not heat it this time. Every now and then I would take it out wipe off the black film and check its prgress.
