According to a friend's father, it used to be the fashion among the trade classes in
the british isles and europe that a father would give his son, or a master
his apprentice in some cases, a brace of razors, the key to the family home,
a bible and a walking cane or in some cases a shillelagh (an Irish walking stick /club).
