Where do you get your acrylics? I'm getting prepared to put some scales on a blade.
Thanks,
Kent

Thanked: 13245Kent:
I saw your question on the other thread too, sir, but this source is still unproved.... I have made only 2 sets of scales out of their stuff, so I don't feel comfoftable with quoting a source yet...
Once I have done a few more sets and made sure there are no problems, I will be more than happy to give a link...Rest assured before I post a source I have tested something to the best of my ability...
Also these are blocks of acrylics, so you have to have a saw that can cut them into sheets....

Beautiful work again Glen!
I'm going to mention this, as i don't think you'll take offence. I don't understand why it should need to balance on the tang. I could understand that if you shaved with it in that position. Surely the balance is completely altered when it's in the position used while shaving?

I take absolutely no offense Ben, the balance is only a reference point, it is not an absolute...It is also not my idea, I found this to be true on most vintage razors, so I figured those guys might know a thing or two about razors....
If the razor balances on the tang where you hold it the chances of it being well balanced in the hands while shaving are much better... This is not an absolute rule, but test the theory yourself with some vintage razors and see what you find... This is how I learned about restoring razors, I never read or watched anything..... I took a whole gaggle of vintage razors apart, weighed, measured, and referenced everything I could.... I was trying to find the whys of almost 300 years of razor building, some things I found to be pretty consistent, others I found to be more opinion or the makers own design...
There are razors out there that do not balance at all near the tang two that come to mind are the Wapi w/SS scales and the new AOS TI w/SS scales...
Edit: I think the real test for this razor, will come in a few days when Jim shaves this razor again, maybe he can tell us if the razor feels more balanced now??????Last edited by gssixgun; 07-23-2009 at 08:32 PM.

Thanks Glen. I was interested in what made you balance them like that & now i know! Your resto photo's prompted me to see where my RW balanced when it arrived few weeks ago. It balances just the same.

I finally got this today, should have had it Saturday am but never heard the US mail person knock on our door, I must have just missed her/him . I never noticed the issues that Glen detailed above except the crack on the middle pin which looked much worse then in the above pictures, fwiw I got another same razor hardly used either and now upon close examination I can see it has a very thin hairline crack at the middle pin as well. Fortunately despite reading the restore tutorials and other threads I am glad I sent it to a Pro.
To the razor as usual imho Glen's pictures while getting much better aren't as good as looking at the razor in person, there is definitely a wow factor when opening it up and looking at Glen's work, the scales have some nice light green highlights throughout them not very visible in the pictures and the scales themselves have a real nice beefy feel to them, no doubt they will be able to support the weight of the blade easily.
As to balance well your post got me thinking so I checked quite a few of my razors, and the couple that did not balance properly also happened to be the razors that feel awkward to me when stropping, in fact it was easy to pick out which razors would be off balance before trying them. I am sure the being off balance for most razors like mine can be overcome whether it is when stropping or shaving but the razors that center are just easier to work with for me when stropping anyhow, as usual ymmv.
SOTD, this razor, TOBS Mr Taylor cream, custom Shavemac 4400403 and Aqua Velva Sport, 3 passes very smooth
