Blue Steel Special in one piece denim micarta
I just finished a (no name?) Blue Steel Special. Blade was decent where it layed in the scales forever, but outside of the scales area had significant rust and pitting. I sanded most of it out as far as I was comfortable with, then hit it with the buffers.
The shank has "Blue Steel Special" on one side with nothing on the other. I searched and seen there were a few makers of Blue Steel, but have no idea on this one. Not even a country of origin. It appears to be a full hollow ground. Size is 6/8. Any info is appreciated.
The original scales were cracked and appeared to be black plastic. The scales are a one piece formed denim micarta. I did not cut the slot. 5 layers on each side and wedge area is folded denim (4 times) a slug was put in between the sides while pressing, curing and shaping.
Sharpen and shave sometime today, I hope.Last edited by kilowattkid; 09-26-2009 at 03:24 PM. Reason: Oops, I forgot to clean the buffing junk out of the slot.

Thanked: 105Kinfolks made a Blue Steel Special. They are excellent shavers. Possibly it was made by them and did not get stamped on the other side?

Thanked: 13249That came out very nice..
I gotta go with a mis-stamped Kinfolks too, that front stamp looks just like mine...
Although the shoulder and toe are a little different looking...
Here is the old thread but the Pic doesn't show the tang stamp

One more just a touch better

Thanked: 124Thats interesting. I've got a "blue steel" that I'm fixing up some now, and its made by Buchholz & Maus ( the 2 "H"s aren't a mistype). I guess one of the blue steel companies wasn't big into protecting it's brand name, unless they're related somehow. This one actually has bluing on the spine and tang, though its pretty worn.

Nice job on the scales.
I've got a blade with just "Blue Steel" on the tang. It came in a lot I purchased, with no scales. It's a 5/8" spike, about 1/2 hollow.

Pete_s - Interesting indeed, that's what I keep saying. I've seen it on knife forums and just had to try it on a razor. The one piece molded was the kicker for me ( I hate pinning the wedge area ).
Glenn & Tim - I was hoping you would say a mis-marked Kinfolks, I just didn't want to make that claim. I have seen other brands as Pete stated, but who knows. If it shaves well, I'll be happy.
Interesting indeed.

Thanked: 154Beautiful work! The denim scales really complement the blued spine. If the razor is indeed a Kinfolks, then the denim would seem even more appropriate. Thanks for sharing!
