Thanks! However, I wouldn't throw in the towel so quick if I were you. *grin*
You've done a better job on your blade and the tight inlay work on the scale more than speaks for itself!
I'm not blowin' smoke to say that you've done a top of the line job.
This contest goes through the end of next month, I'm just waiting for someone to get inspired by us and do something that spanks both our collective butts!

Oh I have not thrown in the towel. You're probably right and someone is just waiting to post a masterpiece and put us both to shame.

With the 2 entries submitted so far, I won't even try for the custom scales prize.

For a few weeks now I've been thinking about trying to restore a straight. I bought several off ebay last week towards that end. Then today I see there is a contest. Cool!

Nothing like a deadline to get me motivated huh?

let me try to explain.

We (the judges involved) will look, evaluate and give points on all different aspect of a restore and re-scale. And trust me, there's plenty to look at.

Examples are fit, finish, design, originality, wedge/spacer, proportion between scales and blade, peen work, blade restore and finish,...

So again, everbody stands a chance. We also know this is supposed to be your first restore/ re-scale.

Ok, Im gonna put this is the contest and this is my first complete restore of a razor using only what was original except for the brass rod I used to re-pin. The razor was in rough shape very dry and flaking horn scales and a blade that besides pitting and dirt had deep scratches from being put to a grinding wheel 60 grit? not sure, but at some point in it life someone thought that would be a good idea. The good points were it looked repairable and had all original hardware specificaly the domed washers, and the blade shape was still there with no cracks.



First thing I did after a quick assesment was slather neatsfoot on the razor and wraped it in cellophane for a few days took'em out wiped it off and went to the basement.

Now to the start of the job, I filed down the pin heads, then drilled them out so as to save the washers and also being very carefull not to crack the scales. Once that was done I put the hardware aside qick sanded the scales with 400 grit wiped it down and used Epoxy to fill a split or de-lamination on the horn at the pivot end on one and sorta painted over in a squeege thin layer the rest of the scales both sides to fill divets and fissures(mostly on the in-side face) and a scary looking hairline crack at the wedge pin hole. Four houre drying time. Sanding now 320 to 2400 handsanding/polishing with buffing cotton wheel on my cordless drill emory/rouge.
Blade Sanding by hand 120 to 2000 also same polish as above.
Re-pinned with the dome washers and as I found out there were little done washers under the brass ones maybe for support and they were'nt brass either grey metal I did add a small washer for structure under all the original because I though I might crush the domes in tappin the pins

cleaned it all up with microfiber cloth and done, far from flawless not all the domes sit flush pins are tight though I loved doing it and I honed today and got a superb shave
