Introduction and my handmade damascus straight
hey everyone, my name's Dana and i'm a student at Massachusetts college of art and design. my major is jewelry and metalsmithing and this past semester i got to study with master bladesmith, J.D. smith and learn the art of pattern welded steel. i used a mix of 1084 and 15n20 in 274 layers to make a firestorm pattern. i didn't discover this site until after i started the project and i would have done a few things differently if i knew about it sooner! but yeah, i haven't finished the scales or honed it just yet but i'm happy with it and can't wait to finish it! this site is awesome and i can't stop reading and looking at other people's projects/restorations.

What scales are you considering? They'll have to be a bit special!

Very nice.. now is the ball on the end of the tail the same width as the thickest part of the tang? If it is thicker that may make doing scales a little tricky but I definitely like the pattern of the Damascus.

ben- i have some lacewood, but i'm considering some desert ironwood because the lacewood is a busy pattern in and of itself, so i dont want it to detract from the pattern of the steel. i'm not 100 pecent sure what the hardness is, i tempered it by eye to a light straw yellow.
jeff- i'll definitely be making more, i want to choose this as a concentration for my senoir year if i can. but i really want to learn as much as i can before i can feel confident enough to let people use them. for instance, hollow grinding was tough for me but i did it freehand, i wonder if it's more popular to use a jig in a production environment.
troggie, yeah i didn't think about that until afterward..but i'll have to cut a little half circle on each side of where it will go through. i'll cross that bridge when i come to it haha
