Thanked: 993Shumate Barber, W&B Special
Here's two more.
Both hand sanded from 220 to 2000, then Mother's.
The scales are made with maple from my in-laws property, and I used microfasteners for the pins.
Appologies for the pictures, it's a normal camera.
I think....after having previewed this myself....I'll be asking Santa for a nice camera and lens.
I'm really happy with the turnout of both, but the Shumate is my favorite shaver, and I'm just thrilled to have my own scales on it now.
Thanks,
Maxi

Thanked: 13247This is good solid work, I really respect the fact that you are taking your time and doing them by hand with Sandpaper...
I wish more people would start that way...
I used to use wd-40 when I would get to about 600 grit and above on the second pass at that grit.. I would start with it dry then add wd-40 it will give it a softer glow, I can't really tell because of the pics, if you are doing it already
What finish did you use on the maple???
Really nice work, to be proud of...

Thanked: 993Finish.
Wd-40. I'll try that, thanks. So if I understand correctly, one dry pass with the grit, and on the second pass before moving to the next grit, wd-40 as a lubricating agent.
I'm out of razors currently. I bought a couple at the beginning of the summer (I'm a teacher, so I have a little bit of time to play with), so when I get home in the fall, I'll pick up some more to work on.
The scale finish is Minwax Early American (I like the agent in it which soaks into the grain), and I figured because of the tight grain on the maple I'd burnish a couple coats of Tung Oil for the sealant. Both razors are done this way.
I'd really like to get into using a bunch of different materials for scales and finishes, but a little at a time. Living in a condo downtown Toronto doesnt allow me to have oodles of space for a shop. One day.....
