Restoration gone awry
I decided for a change of pace to do a quick clean up rather than new scales etc. I even took before pictures this time.
Thats when things started to go wrong. I broke a scale trying to unpin it. Oh well things just got a little more complicated. I still have a good blade. While polishing the blade I then proceeded to break that. Damn!
I have a coworker that makes carving knifes out of broken razors so I could have given it to him. But I decided to try to make something useful myself. I tried to keep the profile of the blade and I have some antler that I have been wanting to do something with. Straightening the antler added some fun learning to this project. The following is what I ended up with.
It doesn't shave worth a darn but it cut cheese for supper fine and might peel potatoes ok. I think this one will get assigned to the kitchen.

Thanked: 522Not to be a nitpicker but you may have used the wrong end of the antler but on the bright side, you definitely used the right end of the blade. Good job.....

Thanks for that observation.
Every once in a while I have to be reminded that I am not perfect!
I tried putting it in the knive block and the slots are to narrow for the spine. Nothing is going to go right with this.
I am going to cut some cheese and grab some crackers and dream about my next project.

Thanked: 1936I hate to see that and I'm sure it made you sick...but anyone who has restored many razors has broken scales and more than likely blades on the buffer. Now you know to use the utmost care while restoring...remember that and trudge on to the next one.

That stinks man, but it does make me feel better about mine.. haha.. thanks for sharing..
On another note, I had a nice razor with bone scales given to me for Christmas. I cleaned it up and honed it. It turned out to be a great shaver and was working much better than my others. So I took it with me to my nephews house to try teach him a little about str8 shaving since he got his first str8 razor for Christmas. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and the lanyard caught the razor and yanked it out over the tile. Broke the bone scales almost pin to pin when it hit the floor. At least the blade's ok. It's just waiting on a new set of scales now..
