Thread: Three Off the Lathe

Since no one has said otherwise I'll keep posting these here.

I chose to hit the lathe instead of studying again. One in acrylic, one in polyester and one in sapele. The sapele brush needs a special finish and I'll post another set of pics then ship it to Florida. The acrylic is for me (until someone takes it). The polyester is about 16mm in an extra small handle for the wife; if she has a small razor she will also need a small brush.

As you can see I setup a makeshift light box (thanks Brian) and attempted to play with it. I really like the lightbox and hope to get the hang of it eventually. Please feel free to give me advise on this as well. I made it out of translucent white acrylic, a canvas and two of my shirts. I think that I will assemble it tomorrow instead of making the wife hold it while I click. Oh, these are still mobile phone shots and the lights are "borrowed" from a few of the snakes.

Wow, I love the look and shape of that sapele, can't wait to see it finished. And the white one looks great, the small profile and shape is very nice, and the last one has some wild looking colors, great work Gerrit. BTW, this may be a stupid question, but what kind of lathe do you use to turn the acrylic, wood or metal?

I use a wood lathe for 90% of my turning, but I have yet to purchase every chuck for my wood lathe. In the case that I don't have the correct jaws I will use my metal lathe for some of the work. There is also the case where it is easier for me to walk from my wood shop to my metal shop than it is to change jaws on my chuck.

These brushes look fantastic. Especially first and fifth. Beauty queens.

Those are some beautifully shaped handles, very classy looking. There is something about the combination of the material and shape of the acrylic one that really floats my boat. You do great work.

Nice work. For me a brush handle should always have a flat bottom. I do hang them upside down in a stand to dry, but I have a rotation so once dry, they stand upright on the flat bottom. Just something to think about if you're going to get into marketing them.
