Thanked: 114Thanks for the link. They seem to have a large selection and prices seem decent too. For example, it looks like a 1.5" X 1.5" X 6" piece of African blackwood is $8.50. That should be enough material for 2?? full sets of scales if your precise with the table saw. I noticed that they also sell thin stock that might be easier to work with. For example, a 1/8" X 3" X 24" piece of gaboon ebony is $30. Expensive, yes, but that should easily be enough material for 4 full sets of scales. I will call them to see if they might be able to produce the blackwood in thin stock which would presumably be less expensive than the gaboon. Thanks again for the link.

Thanked: 114Interesting. How do you get up to 6 sets out of 1.5” X 1.5” X 6” piece? Your table saw skills must be far far better than mine. For six sets you’d need 12 pieces (12 @ 1.5” X 6”), right? If each piece starts at 1/8” before sanding, there’s only 12 possible slices and that’s before considering how much material is lost with each cut. You must be cutting the slices very thin or you have a very thin saw blade – or, most likely, your skills are in a completely different league than mine. :-) :-)

use a good band saw with a good rip fence. If the blank is 1.5", that = 6 .25" sections. I can typically get 4-5 good pieces out of that. Other wise just get the 1/4x1.5x9 pieces. I get two scales per 1/4x1.5x9 plus two wedges usually, depending on the size/style of scale design. LOL I have two sets of scales drying and finishing right now. one cocobolo and one bocote
