chanisaw bar razor
Hi. This was my first atempt to make straight razor.
Blade is made from old oregon chainsaw bar and the scales are jeans micarta with brass wire pins.
All parts laying around garage, just bought figerglass resin for micarta.
I used only few hand tools and basic model of bench grinder.
Shaves perfectly for over a year now, had to sharpen it only 2 times so far.
Hope you fokes like it.

Great job, and if the trees need trimming, you're good to go!

Dang impressive. Quite handsome. Beautifully executed. Done on a bench grinder - I'm still shaking my head. Bravo!
I'd love to have seen you do the grinding.

Thanked: 170I love stories like this. DIY to the core! The blue jean micarta turned out really nice. Like the jimps. Like the blade in general. Did you harden the blade, or just go with what it was? There was a post about a file razor some time back where he was just careful not to overheat it during the grinding, and did not harden it. Any idea what kind of steel it was? I'd make a guess at one of the 10 series - 1056? 1065? ??????

Glad you fokes like it.
I used angle grinder to cut the razor from the bar.
It was slow and painfull, so was the grinding, because the bar is already hardened.
So I didn't harden it myself.
And yes, I was extra carefull not to orerheat it during the grinding.
I guess I didn't hurt the steel because it is holding the edge preaty good.
Fast run on the grinder and cooling it in water every time.
I don't know exactley what kind of steel it is, but I guess it is 1056.
Here is my second razor, same process, but with some hard wood scales.
This time I tried to harden it with acetylene torch and dipping it into oil.
Don't know if I did good work, but it is very hard, harder than the first one.
btw, sorry I suck at photography
