Nice
It's fun to see how the pattern steps out when working on layered G10!

The Thistle came out of idea Glen planted while he was teaching me how to hone on the Norton 4/8. This visit to Glen's brought up the topic of various steels and how responsive they are or aren't to various stones in his "full arsenal."
In fact, Glen was saving me from myself, or HAD. Here I was hell-bent to start saving for Shaptons, and then he tells me he pretty much only uses them on hard NY steel. Lo' and behold, I had no NY steel, so later he sent me a few EBay links, and the rest is history. He suggested a Kinfolks Blue Steel Special along with the Thistle. The Blue Steel was so sweet, we decided to leave her as-is. She shaves like no one's business, and the whole foray into NY steel really showed me what vintage steel is all about.
Then, after Glen restored the Thistle, he honed it a second time on his Naniwa progression (previously honed on Shaptons at Yakima meet), and she oddly shaves better in terms of feel. So who needs Shaptons now?
As for vintage razors, I'm sold, and they are atop my rotation every bit as my favorite custom Lewis.

Awesome story. I knew it had to be more than a mere whim on your behalf lol!
A great blade is a great blade, but somehow when I "customize" mine, there is just that extra... of course when I blow it, the exact opposite applies lol... sigh.
FWIW - who needs a reason to buy a set of Shaptons LOL : )!? That said I am glad you sold me on the Naniwa's, they have given me some of my greatest shaves!

Thanked: 13245The only small detail Mark left out in that whole story David was that both razors even with the "Mint" Kinfolks cost him less than $100, I sent him the links and gave him max bid numbers, LOL he ended up getting both I didn't tell him to bid on both that was all his own RAD talking
Now who says deals can't be found out there...

I almost forgot the fancy grind surprise; this Thistle is a bellied hollow, something Glen only noticed once he cleaned up all the muck. Woohoo!
