Bringing in the Greaves
Many years ago as I started straight shaving, this was one of my first razors and my first English one. I remember honing it up with my progression of barber's hones and My "Red Imp" strop! I was always amazed at how well it shaved. I learned it had been reground at some point in it's history as it was a wedge back in the 1840's as new.
The top was sloppily pinned with big steel collars and it had some pretty good bug damage on the wedge end, so one day I unpinned it and there it sat on the shelf for many years awaiting some matching collars.
I had forgotten it until about a week ago as I discovered it lying on a shelf behind some other stuff. I dug out some similar collars, albeit smaller, and devised a way to use Babur's collars and some brass spacers to create some which are very close. I repaired the bug bites with epoxy and bakelite dust and oiled the scales up with Neetsfoot oil, lightly polishing the blade. Old School!
It pinned up tight with the collars resting on bronze spacers between the blade and scales. Now, I will treat it to a better hone job than I did back then!
I am glad to have this oldie back on the line.
Thanks to all for looking,
Tom

Thank you Wullie. I am flattered that you would remember my quote of "Greaveses have souls". I think it is true as well.
Being an old MC guy, you should recognize where that came from! A song! I kindof adapted it to Greaveses having souls.
" Greaveses and Nortons, and Harleys won't do. They don't have a soul, like a Vincent 52!"
Thanks, Buddy!

Nice job Tom. Great work with the collars.

1830's, actually.
I have one of those too, though mine is the original wedge. For extra spice, someone kept it in a drawer with some righteous cell-rot so one side of the blade is 'suntanned'. Fortunately only on the part outside the scales.
It's one of my favorite shavers, as all my Greaves are.
Fantastic job!-Zak Jarvis. Writer. Artist. Bon vivant.
