Custom travel razor...
I recently bought this Oxford Warranted razor for restoration...but my first impression of it wasn't good and decided not to bother. Later I came back to it and decided to have some fun with it.
After returning from a trip, frustrated how awkwardly my razors fit in my toiletry kit. I decided to make a more travel friendly straight. This is what I came up with...it feels great in the hand and seems like it would excel at all those awkward places like neck hollows and precision beard lines.
Hoping to get some honest thoughts and opinions, as I've never done or seen anything else like this. If you don't like it, my feeling won't be hurt...I'd rather get an honest reaction.

Haha! I just learned this type of short razor is called a "dwarf" razor...and made by a few different vintage companies

Not for me, but I don't think this subforum is the place to attempt sales. You might go down to the Auction Talk subforum and post it there. You will get more responses, I suppose.

...not looking for advertising, just opinions. It is on eBay, but I haven't posted any links or shortcuts for finding it.

Thanked: 603It does read somewhat awkwardly. That is to say, the entire post -- up to and including the photographs -- is a "Show and Tell"; and then you add the kicker (spoiler?): This item is currently listed on eBay.
Seems kind of disingenuous of you. I certainly thought you'd done the "sex change" for your own pleasure... travel, and all that... but why would you want to sell it, after all that work?

I agree that it was a real spoiler to see that you listed it on eBay. But besides that, I give you credit for ingenuity. Are those the original scales cut down to fit the blade? Here's what I like: the small size, the spine work, your fine work in restoring the blade as well as your craftsmanship in wholly reshaping the the blade. What is a real turn off for me are the three pins on the toe end of the scales. You had such a nice thing going and over did it, IMHO.

Custom travel razor...
Thank you lion, that is exactly what I'm looking for...I've already regretted the eBay quip, everyone seems hung up on that.
I sell almost everything I create...the act of restoring these razors is very mindless and meditative for me. It takes me back to my childhood and allows me to shut out the stresses of losing my career to someone blowing a stop sign (last feb). Selling is what keeps this hobby/therapy self supporting. I will make several of these designs before I come up with the one I like the best and keep it.Last edited by uprootedtraveler; 10-22-2012 at 02:27 AM.

Technically the scales are from 2 completely separate razors...although you'd never know it, one is from a Worcester razor company and the other is original.
My original thought was to add a Spanish point...which came out great, but later broke during later buffing. After the 2nd attempt broke too, I finally gave up cursing.

Agree on the comment of overdoing the pinning. The reshaping is kind of cool but for my taste I would have prefered an actual barbers notch. I'm digging the spine work and the shape of the scales near the pivot.

In all honesty, Traveler, the original looked in great condition to me. I would never modify an original that only needed cleaning. I for sure would never modify a good razor to match a carry kit.
The Oxford Razors are great razors, IMO. I wish you would have left it original & waited for one that had a damaged toe, to modify.
BUT,,,
if you are happy with it, then that's all that really matters.
