Thanked: 7One day I want to make something similar and your piece has inspired me! Would you get cranky with me if I did make a kami with scales?

I guess I'd feel about the same as when Tim Zowada asked me if he too could copy my designs and give credit where it's due,, flattered

At this point I just used some A1 and D2 steels. Easy to work , easy to treat. I've been using 3/16 steel. The thing that matters is being able to calculate the angle of the edge based on the width of the blade ( from the hone line, not spine) vs. the thickness to end up with a decent angle at the edge. Remember the angle is based on half the thickness of the blade,, then doubled , not the thickness of the overall blade vs. the width.

Thanked: 7Did you tape it to hone it? Looks like a nice bevel.

I did happen to tape this one so as not to mar the finish. I did calculate the angle and the tape wasn't a factor as far as the angle was concerned.
Though this does have a wide bevel taping plays no part in it as that is only a result of the thickness of the metal at the edge. Taping doesn't affect that. And with a Kami type blade you also have to consider the nature of one side being nearly a wedge and the other side a hollow grind has on the bevel itself.
